Profile
Founded in August 1996, Södertörn University is one Sweden’s youngest university colleges. The university has grown rapidly; today there are 6,300 full time students enrolled. Södertörn University offers approximately 31 Study Programs, all of which maintain a strong link between academic teaching and research, as well as collaboration among different academic disciplines.

The many interdisciplinary programs make the university unique in Sweden. Many of the courses and educational programs are concerned with issues of ethnicity, migration, and nationalism in modern Europe. The aim is to prepare students for a future that will require flexible, imaginative people with university-level educations. Södertörn University has two campuses: the main campus is located in Flemingsberg; the other campus is Campus Haninge.

Location
The area of Södertörn (a large peninsula covering the southern part of Stockholm county) offers a varied landscape with suburban centers as well as large forests and lakes and many opportunities for outdoor activities including bicycling, cross-country skiing, ice skating, and hiking. The university is very close to Stockholm - the Flemingsberg campus is only 20 minutes by train from central Stockholm - with its rich historical and cultural heritage, and shopping and entertainment facilities. Sodertorns hogskola is located in a growing metropolitan area south of Stockholm, distinguished by a population of many different cultures. One of the primary tasks for this newly founded university college is to increase student recruitment to higher education in this area.

Academic Notes
Students have a variety of courses to choose from: Södertörn University offers more than 80 courses taught in English. Each semester is divided into four periods of about one month each. Students usually schedule one full time course per period. Courses span one or two periods. There are also a few half-speed courses that span two periods; two of these can easily be taken simultaneously. Swedish courses are worth 7.5 or 15 points (equivalent to about 4 or 8 U.S. credits).

Södertörn University welcomes students at the sophomore level and upwards. However, sophomores should be aware that they have fewer courses to choose from since many courses are taught at an supplementary and advanced level, including all business and natural science courses, and most of the economic and political science courses. Course pre-requisites are usually one to two years of previous study in the particular field.

ISEP students are welcome to take courses that are part of the different Master programs without having a bachelor degree, but they must have studied enough credits in the specific subject that is required.

Students studying English can do so with Swedish students, for information about courses available, please contact the ISEP coordinator at Södertörn University.

In some cases students studying biology or micro-biology can do lab-work either as a course or as a voluntary work. If a student is interested in doing lab work, please contact the ISEP coordinator at Södertörn University well in advance of applying to ISEP to find out if it is possible. It depends on the student’s previous studies and the availability of projects.
