Students attending Al Akhawayn University (AUI) enroll full-time and choose from a variety of classes to earn credits for major, minor or electives. All students at Al Akhawayn live in residence halls with a roommate to help foster connections with other students. All courses are offered in English; however, students also have the opportunity to learn or improve on their Arabic, French or Spanish throughout the semester.

Academic Calendar
Academic Year: Late August to mid-May
Semester 1: Late August to December
Semester 2: mid-January to mid-May

Accommodation
All students must live on campus in double rooms in one of the residence halls; no single rooms are available to students. Every student receives a fixed amount on their cash wallets (meal cards) which cover 21 meals per week at the university’s dining hall. Students cannot make purchases on campus with cash or debit cards, and if need be, money can be added to the cash wallet to cover extra expenses on campus.

Al Akhwayan Activities
Academic Subject Areas
Al Akhawayn has three main undergraduate schools: School of Business Administration, School of Science and Engineering, and School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Please see subject areas at top of program brochure page and/or visit the AUI website below to browse for courses:

Credit Hours
Students must take a minimum of the equivalent of 12 US credits while abroad to be enrolled full-time. Most AUI courses are worth 3 US credits, and students typically take 5 courses in a semester. The Moroccan grading system is very similar to that of the United States.

Location
Al Akhawayn University is located in the resort town of Ifrane, in the midst of the Middle Atlas Mountains. Ifrane has a population of 12,000 but this number expands to nearly 100,000 during weekends, holidays and summer due to its beauty all year round. Ifrane is home to the largest cedar forest in North Africa, with easy access to major cities such as Rabat, Casablanca, Fez, and Meknes. For ski lovers, there are two ski slopes about 25 minutes from campus and the Sahara desert is a 6 hour drive away.

University
Al Akhawayn University was founded in 1993 by Royal Dahir in Ifrane, Morocco and was inaugurated in 1995 by His Majesty King Hassan II and Crown Prince Abdallah bin Abdel-Aziz of Saudi Arabia. The University is coeducational and residential with a primarily undergraduate population. The student to full time faculty ratio is 14 to 1 ensuring a demanding yet personalized learning experience. Outside the academic realm, there are hundreds of University student-run activities available to all students living on campus.

Language of Instruction
All university courses are taught and assessed in English.

Enrollment Size
There are about 2,040 full time students enrolled at Al Akhawayn University. 1,845 of these students are undergraduates and the remaining 194 graduates. The gender ratio is approximately 50% female and 50% male.

Eligibility Requirements

  • 2.75 GPA
  • Typically must have at least sophomore class status to apply
  • Spaces are somewhat limited and you must be nominated by Agnes Scott
Cost
Students continue to pay their regular tuition, standard on-campus double room and 21-meal plan at Agnes Scott, and all financial aid applies.

All ASC Exchange and ISEP programs have various methods of providing services and/or additional or optional fees. Every country and university is different. Typical additional costs for study abroad include program application fee, airfare, international health insurance, visa or residency permit, travel for visit to embassy or consulate for visa appointment, immunizations, refundable housing deposit, textbooks, international calling plan, and more.

See Budget Sheet above for more information about typical extra expenses in Morocco (currently under construction).

There is no application fee for this program.

Other Considerations
Language courses available:

  • Arabic: both Modern Standard Arabic and Moroccan Arabic are offered to students in addition to regular classes during the academic year. Modern Standard Arabic can be taken at the beginner, intermediate or advanced level; however Moroccan Arabic is only available for students who have studied a semester of Arabic or are familiar with Arabic script.
  • French and Spanish: French and Spanish can be taken at the beginner level each semester. Intermediate French is also offered each semester; but Intermediate Spanish is only available depending on demand.
  • Note that French is taught as a second language at AUI, not a foreign language, therefore not many French culture or literature courses are available.

For all language classes, students who exceed the beginner level must take a placement test prior to registration for classes.

Airport pickups will be available from Fez to Ifrane for a fee, and students must provide travel itineraries to their host coordinator at least one week in advance if they want to patronise this service.
